Competitors Coca-Cola Brazil and Ambev announced today (10/4/2017) the launch of a joint recycling program. Named to Recycle by Brazil, the unified platform counts on the partnership of the National Association of Collectors and Collectors of Recyclable Materials (ANCAT). One of the main objectives of the integration of the programs of the two beverage manufacturers is to optimize and boost the results of the investments directed to the cooperatives of scavengers in the Country. The expectation is that the 110 cooperatives that are part of the initial stage of the program receive up to 25% more investment.

In addition to boosting investments, Recycle For Brazil also aims to collaborate with the goal of the Packaging Sector Agreement, which is to reduce at least 22% of packaging disposed in landfills by 2018. The union also strengthens the environmental commitment of the two companies, which have been investing in recycling and cooperative support programs for more than 10 years.

“With the program, we are joining efforts not only to reduce the environmental impact of our packaging, but to develop, train and professionalize collector cooperatives more and more,” says Pedro Mariani, vice president of Corporate and Legal Relations at Ambev.

“Ideally, no component of a product should be regarded as waste. The packaging is 100% reusable and has market value, that is, can and should return to the industrial cycle. This is a priority agenda, beyond any competitive logic, “adds Pedro Rios, vice president of Corporate Relations at Coca-Cola Brazil.

The program, the result of a year of joint work, was created with the participation of ANCAT, which will also operate the program, with a technical advisory team. This team will work in the 110 associations of collectors that integrate the program in its initial phase. The first step is to carry out a periodic and customized diagnosis and plan of action to direct investments according to the needs of each cooperative. The main objectives are: to professionalize and regularize the work of organizations; increase the volume of waste collected; increase the income of cooperatives; and increase the income of the collectors.

Companies are now seeking to join other industries to increase the impact of the project exponentially.

“We accepted the challenge of building this joint platform because we believe that the collectors will be the main beneficiaries. This partnership will contribute to advancing the qualification of cooperatives, especially in their legal regularization, improvement of infrastructure and the construction of better working conditions. The union of the two companies is an important contribution to the effective participation of the organizations of waste pickers in the implementation of the National Solid Waste Policy, “says Roberto Laureano, president of ANCAT.
